General Safety Company, Inc. operated as a partnership for the first few years of its existence and then operated as a Sole Proprietorship for over 20 years. Effective in April, 1999 General Safety became incorporated. It is now a corporation organized and existing under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. General Safety Company, Inc. is not a charitable organization.
General Safety Company, Inc. is located at 110 Sunset Avenue, Suite 100, Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania 17112-3055 and has been at this location since May 2009.
General Safety Company, Inc. was established in 1972. Our mission is to offer a local, cost efficient advertising media to businesses while promoting school bus traffic safety. We accomplish this task by contacting businesses, via telephone, offering advertising opportunities on our publication: The General Safety School Bus Traffic Safety Calendar. Our marketing area includes: Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware.
In 1994, in accordance with Pennsylvania Legislation, we registered with the Pennsylvania Department of State, Bureau of Charitable Organizations. The official registration statement and financial information of General Safety Company, Inc. may be obtained from the Pennsylvania Department of State by calling toll free, within Pennsylvania, 1 (800) 732-0999. Registration does not imply endorsement.
Using the telephone for sales is the most cost efficient method of marketing our product, enabling us to keep advertising costs as low as possible for our customers.
General Safety has participated with local vocational and technical schools as well as colleges, employing students and giving these students experience in the printing, advertising and sales fields.
General Safety employees generously donate their time to help local charities. Our employees select a few charitable projects per year to support by fund-raising or volunteer work. A project for which we are extremely proud was the purchase of a cornea through the Penbrook Lions Club so that we were able to give someone in our community the Gift of Sight!
General Safety Company, Inc. employees are proud of our company and we are proud of the job they do for us and for our customers. All employees freely identify themselves by first and last name each time they deal with a customer. Telephone Sales Representative as well as our Advertising Representative first and last names are printed on every advertising contract so each customer knows the person with whom they have dealt.
Did You Know...Your Ad Purchase is NOT a charitable donation. It is, however, tax deductable as a standard business advertising expense. The General Safety Company, Inc. is NOT a charitable organization however, under Pennsylvania Law; we are registered with the PA Department of State, Bureau of Charitable Organizations.
The official registration and financial information of General Safety Company, Inc. may be obtained from the Pennsylvania Department of State by calling toll free, within Pennsylvania,
1-800-732-0999. Out of state callers can receive the same information by calling (717) 783-1720. (N.B. Long Distance charges will apply to this 717 number.) Registration does not imply endorsement.
The calendar itself is brightly colored to attract attention, 11" x 17" in size, and was designed by a local college art student. The size of the calendar was originally more than double its current size but due to consumer preference, the size was reduced. The characters and content on the calendar are updated and we routinely make changes in the graphics and production departments in an effort to enhance our product’s appearance.
The theme of the calendar is school bus safety awareness.
General Safety updates the safety messages appearing on the calendar every few years by contacting each state’s department of transportation, state police, and related departments. We change the themes of these messages according to current public concerns and trends.
Public service messages are also printed on the calendar free of charge when we are notified of a community need or as requested by civic or public service organizations.
Our ad prices are very reasonable ranging in cost from $55.00 per year to $168.00 per year for the standard 5" wide ads and $70.00 to $130.00 per year for the 3" wide ads. Larger specialty ads (Banner & Mega Display) can also be purchased.
As a result of consumer demand, we offer the 3-line business listing for only $40 per year. The three lines of copy include the Business Name, up to 2 phone numbers and the business location.
Statistics show that approximately 70% of our customers are renewal customers and have advertised for an average of 5 years. This statistic alone gives us assurance of the value, worthiness and acceptance of our product.
We guarantee all customers satisfaction with our product and when occasional complaints are received we immediately do our best to rectify the problem. Problems are resolved by full or partial refunds, free or larger ads, and even the reprinting of calendars when the situation requires such.
All businesses receive a copy of the calendar bearing their ad for their records.
General Safety’s customer database is computerized and this helps the office staff to reply to customer questions and concerns in a more timely and efficient manner, and as with all computers, ours has glitches which sometimes cause unpredictable problems so we appreciate your patience when that happens.
The Graphics Department handles advertisers’ calls, faxes, emails and proof requests as expeditiously as possible.
All ads appear on the front face of the calendar and not on the date pad tear-away sheets, thereby providing advertising coverage for one full year at one reasonable price.
Businesses who advertise on our calendar receive great exposure for their business because our distribution pattern definitely gets their company’s name out in the community.
Advertisers are grouped together by communities and are kept within their consumer areas as defined by telephone directories and telephone exchanges.
Calendars are distributed to public areas thereby increasing the viewing audience to the general public.
The General Safety Company, Inc. graphics department designs and arranges copy professionally using up-to-date computer graphics technology including Adobe PageMaker 7.0, Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and CorelDraw 10. The graphics department staff communicates with customers when questions arise and are ready to offer suggestions on body copy and logo selections.
General Safety Company, Inc. continues to be ready to face any challenges of this new millennium. Calendars will always be hung up and used; technology can never replace the ease with which we can glance up to see a day, week, month; check a holiday or see the day of the week a birthday falls on. In fact, as technology takes over our schedule, daily planners and diaries - the more our dependency on these visual calendars will become.
Our calendar theme, School Bus Traffic Safety, is universal and always timely. It will always be “politically correct” to promote safety on and near school buses; our message is direct and applicable to everyone everywhere. And of course, our calendar is kept current; safety rules and regulations are updated on a regular basis.
Did You Know...Public Service Messages are printed on the calendar
free of charge when we are notified of a community need or as requested by a civic or public service organization.
In fact, this was one of the organizations that our staff selected for a fundraiser. We held a “SNIP IT FOR SNAP” to raise money for this worthy cause.
All telephone sales originate from our office in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Our Telemarketing Sales Representatives are our employees. We do not outsource, we keep our jobs in the country. Their combined years of experience with our company total more than 40 years. (Please note that all advertising sales are done over the telephone. General Safety does not sell advertising using a door-to-door canvas method.)
Our telephone sales staff consists of professionals, handling their territories and customers with friendliness, honesty, efficiency, and, with a proper business demeanor.
As a matter of company policy, each of our telephone sales representatives identifies himself or herself on the phone by name as well as by company so every customer has the assurance of a “real person” whom they can call if any questions arise. The name of the telephone sales representative is also printed on the bottom of each customer’s advertising contract or invoice.
Our Sales Reps. use their real names, on the phone, not pseudo-names or fake names. Our policy is that integrity and honesty start from within. Our Telephone Sales Reps as well as all of our employees each, personally, accept responsibility for how they represent our firm as well as how they treat our customers. Integrity and professionalism are important to General Safety Company, Inc. and to our employees.
Did You Know…Using the telephone for sales is the most cost efficient method of marketing for us. Using our staff of professional Sales Representatives enables us to keep advertising costs as low as possible for our customers.
The General Safety Company, Inc. uses the services of Independent Contractors in the capacity of Advertising Representatives. We contract with these individuals to visit each of our advertising customers. Though these representatives are self-employed, most have had an association with our firm for many years.
Due to the nature of our business, i.e. telemarketing of advertising space, we suggest that an Advertising Representative visit the customer site. We contract with these representatives for the purpose of personally getting ad copy instructions as well as to provide the customer with an extra insurance of having a personally signed receipt for their ad payments.
Each Ad Rep is expected to carry the Advertising Representative Manual with him/her at all times for the purpose of identifying that Ad Rep as an Authorized Representative of General Safety. The Manual is not only a source of identification but also contains information about General Safety Company, Inc.; about the General Safety School Bus Traffic Safety Calendar; and, details our advertising policies and pricing.
A major responsibility of the Field Rep is to verify the accuracy of customer’s files; making sure we have current locations, updated ad copy, as well as valid third class mailing addresses. Due to the bar-coding requirement for Bulk Mail, it is extremely important to have correct mailing addresses. When we ship at the Bulk Rate, we must presort and sack our mailings labeling them for the appropriate SCF or BMC facility. This process takes all familiarity out of the equation - we can’t rely on a Mail Man to deliver to a customer because he/she knows him. If the address isn’t bar-codable as it never makes it into the sack. Even when we have a bar-codable address, but it is not correct address, the item (calendar) itself is trashed and a notice of disposition is sent to General Safety - the addressee. The notice either lets us know that the calendar itself was destroyed and no update to the address is provided or destroyed but notifies us of the correct address.
Every customer is sent one copy of the calendar for his/her records. Again, it is important to stress the necessity of a valid and correct bar-codable mailing address.
Customer requests for additional copies are sent for the cost of postage and a $1.25 per calendar fee. If a customer requests additional copies of the calendar for a civic organization, e.g. Scout Group, Safety Seminar and documents intended use in writing, reorders for public use are sent free of charge. Use the Special Request Form if a customer makes such a request to you.
General Safety has selected a distribution pattern which enhances the value of each customer’s ad by sending the calendars free of charge to various public places where the calendar is exposed to the general population.
We have selected a cross-range of addresses consisting of city, township and municipal offices, police departments, fire departments, public and private schools, libraries, civic organizations, social clubs, government social agencies and district justice/court offices.
Each possible entry falling into the categories listed above is further expanded by keying into the computer a subcategory code which increases the total possible distribution. These subcategories reflect appropriate departments or offices within an organization, e.g. a business office (any category), school nurse (school category) and social hall (fire dept., civic or social club.
Our distribution list is computerized and selection for distribution is done by a programmed random method which we feel offers customers the best distribution pattern. We constantly update and correct our address file. As with the customer calendars, the general distribution is subject to the same criteria. If we have mailed with an invalid address, the calendar is destroyed and we either get a notice that we use an undeliverable address or we get an updated address. For the general distribution, we subscribe to the postal ACS program and receive updates monthly on CD.
Distribution lists for any area are available upon request and provided at no additional charge. Publication Request form must be filled out by the Ad Rep for us to fulfill a Distribution List request and we must get a fax or email address to send the list.
Additionally, customers can (and often do) make requests for specific distribution and these requests are always satisfied. In fact, requests of this nature are shipped separately from the regular mailings and are sent with a cover letter crediting that customer for the special request.
All calendars are shipped with the endorsement “change service requested” so every attempt is made to keep our lists accurate and current. However, since return service and forwarding postage is not guaranteed, we receive only a notice of the address change and the actual calendar is often destroyed and disposed of by the post office. It is important for the field representative to verify and update all customer addresses. Additionally, customers must notify us of any address changes to assure their receipt of the calendar.
All calendars are shipped under the category of Bar-coded Standard A Flats through the US Postal Service under our permit.
Did You Know...the calendar on which your ad is printed is sent to public places (where exposure is increased) and not to individual homes (where exposure is limited) and hanging a calendar in a kitchen or a child’s room would be of little or no value to an advertiser.
As well, that if you hang your copy of the calendar in a visual place, near your entry/exit door; near your cash registers or Service Desk, you will increase the ad visibility and exposure for all of the businesses on your calendar.
The General Safety Company, Inc. is not associated with, sponsored by, or affiliated with any other organization, agency or company.
The General Safety Company, Inc. does not solicit advertising using a door-to-door method. All ad space is reserved and sold by our telephone sales staff. Although, General Safety does make use of field representatives who personally see each customer to give individually signed receipts for payments and who have been trained to assist customers in ad copy preparation. These field representatives are generally exempt from solicitation permits because they are meeting only businesses who have purchased ad space.
Distribution of the calendar is to public places (where exposure is increased) not individual homes or residences (where exposure is limited) and hanging a calendar in a kitchen or a child’s room would be of little or no value to a lot of our advertisers.
We do not accept donations for our calendar. We do not receive government funding. All monies collected from the sale of advertisement pay for the publication and distribution of the calendars. The General Safety School Bus Traffic Calendar is distributed free of charge* to our advertisers’ public tax supported offices and buildings and areas of public interest. These include municipal, township and borough offices; police and fire departments; libraries; government social service agencies; offices of elementary junior and senior high schools; as well as civic and social organizations. Basically, distribution is geared toward places accessible and visible to the general public. *It is the advertising sales which pay for publication and distribution of the calendar.
General Safety Company, Inc. is registered with the Pennsylvania Department of State. A copy of the registration is included in the field representative manual. The official registration and financial information of General Safety Company, Inc. may be obtained from the Pennsylvania Department of State by calling toll free, within Pennsylvania, 1 (800) 732-0999. Registration does not imply endorsement. Out of state callers can receive the same information by calling (717) 783-1720. (N.B. Long Distance charges will apply to this 717 number.)
Advertisements purchased from the General Safety Company, Inc. are not tax deductible as a charitable donation but as a legitimate business advertising expense. General Safety offers its customers a value priced promotional tool. Advertising on our calendar promotes their individual businesses throughout their own community.
General Safety Company, Inc. does not compete with local schools, police departments, or any organization for donations. We have a viable product and advertising sales alone pay for our calendar’s production.
The General Safety School Bus Traffic Safety Calendar is the same in each of the five states within which we work. It is the marketing area and corresponding advertisers which change on each edition. However, when safety sections are included on a calendar they are customized for each state.
Because we are located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania does not mean that advertisers in New York, for example, are paying to advertise in Pennsylvania. Each customer pays to advertise within his/her own marketing area. It would do Harrisburg area residents no good to view New York ads and it (generally) would be of no value to New York businesses to advertise on the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania editions of the calendars. In fact, since calendar production is our only business, we can often do it less expensively and more cost efficiently than most of our competitors because we are centralized in one location.
Telemarketing is a major industry, in the top ten largest industries, (i.e. JOBS) in this country. Telemarketing organizations are not by their very existence disreputable firms. Telemarketing businesses should be judged by their own merits and not be classed as a group as “bad.”
The employees of the General Safety Company, Inc. are proud of their jobs and the work they do in the advertising field. As of 2004, the average years of service for all of the General Safety staff is 10.07 years. We feel that this a good indicator of the quality of our business and our business practices as well as an indicator of the commitment our employees have to our product, our customers and our company.
Finally, please remember that due to basic economy and our responsibility to our customers to keep costs down, we must use the most effective yet least expensive means to conduct business and in our case, it is by telephone sales. Please note that most of our telemarketing sales are backed up with a visit from a field representative who carries with him credentials, advertising samples, letters of acceptance and all materials being available for our customers’ perusal.
